These festive Swirled Christmas Cookies combine vibrant colors and delightful flavors, creating a cherished holiday treat perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Red and green food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  3. Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl, then gradually mix into the wet ingredients.
  4. Divide the dough, coloring one half red and the other green.
  5. Roll out each dough between parchment paper into rectangles, then chill for 30 minutes.
  6. Create swirls by layering the colored doughs and rolling into a log.
  7. Slice the log into 1/4 inch thick cookies and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes.
  8. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Chilling the dough is crucial for the best swirls. Avoid overmixing to keep the cookies light and tender.
