Description

Deliciously layered bars with buttery shortbread, creamy caramel, and rich chocolate that evoke sweet memories.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter (for caramel)
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (milk or dark)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add in the all-purpose flour and salt until everything is combined. Press into the prepared dish and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  4. Cool completely.
  5. Combine the sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until it simmers and bubbles gently for about 5-8 minutes.
  6. Pour the caramel over the cooled shortbread layer and spread it evenly. Let it set for about 30 minutes.
  7. While the caramel cools, melt the chocolate chips with vegetable oil until smooth.
  8. Pour the melted chocolate over the caramel layer. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until fully chilled and set.
  9. Lift the bars from the dish and cut into squares or rectangles.

Notes

Warm your knife under hot water for easily cut pieces without cracking the chocolate.
