Description

A delightful family heirloom filled with spiced apples and wrapped in a flaky, buttery crust, creating a comforting dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 45 Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 egg, for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for glaze
  • 1 tablespoon milk, for glaze

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water until the dough comes together. Divide in half, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 60 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Filling: Peel, core, and slice apples. Toss with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  3. Roll It Out: Roll chilled dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface, about 1/8 inch thick.
  4. Assembly: Place apple filling down the center of the dough. Fold edges over filling and crimp to seal.
  5. Egg Wash and Bake: Place kringle on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Brush with egg wash and poke holes for steam. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Glazing: Mix powdered sugar with milk and drizzle over the cooled kringle.
  7. Enjoy: Slice and share with loved ones, creating moments of connection.

Notes

Use cold butter for a flaky texture and allow dough to chill for the best results.
