- 4 medium Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1/2 cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them thinly. Toss the slices with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time.
- Sift in flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the apples and lemon zest gently.
- Transfer the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add nuts or oats on top before baking. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
