- 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes
- 2 cups heavy cream (or half-and-half)
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
- Fresh thyme or parsley, for garnish
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Wash and slice the potatoes thinly, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Sauté the garlic in butter over low heat until aromatic.
- In a saucepan, combine the cream, sautéed garlic, salt, pepper, and herbs. Heat until warmed through.
- Layer the sliced potatoes in a buttered baking dish, pouring the creamy mixture over each layer.
- Sprinkle cheese generously between layers and top with remaining cheese.
- Bake uncovered for about 45-50 minutes until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
- Let cool before serving.
Notes
Be careful not to burn the garlic while sautéing. Adjust baking time as necessary depending on your oven.
