Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°F (100°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a clean mixing bowl, beat room temperature egg whites and cream of tartar until foamy.
  3. Gradually add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while beating until stiff peaks form and the mixture is glossy.
  4. Gently fold in peppermint extract and food coloring if using.
  5. Pipe small mounds onto prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each.
  6. Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours until dry to the touch and easily peel away from parchment.
  7. Turn off the oven and let them cool inside with the door ajar.
  8. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.

Notes

Use pasteurized egg whites for safety and consider adding crushed candy canes for decoration.
