  • 1/2 cup unsalted chilled butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or buttermilk/non-dairy milk)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and chai spices until well combined.
  3. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream, egg, and orange zest. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut it into wedges or use a biscuit cutter for round scones.
  6. Place the scones on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let them cool slightly before serving, either warm or at room temperature.
