Description

A festive dessert that combines creamy custard with the bright flavors of orange zest and aromatic spices, perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour (or half whole wheat flour)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted (or coconut oil)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream (or full-fat coconut milk)
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest (or lemon zest)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Add in melted butter and stir until crumbly. Press this mixture firmly into the bottom of a greased 9×9-inch baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes until lightly golden.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until well blended. Add heavy cream, orange zest, and spices. Ensure everything is well incorporated.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the partially baked crust. Carefully place it back into the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggles in the center.
  4. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
  5. Serve at room temperature, but chilling in the fridge for an hour enhances flavors.

Notes

Monitor baking time closely to avoid overcooking, as this can result in a rubbery texture. Allow bars to cool completely before slicing for clean edges.
