Description
A festive dessert that combines creamy custard with the bright flavors of orange zest and aromatic spices, perfect for holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour (or half whole wheat flour)
- ½ cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted (or coconut oil)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream (or full-fat coconut milk)
- 2 tablespoons orange zest (or lemon zest)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Add in melted butter and stir until crumbly. Press this mixture firmly into the bottom of a greased 9×9-inch baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes until lightly golden.
- In another bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until well blended. Add heavy cream, orange zest, and spices. Ensure everything is well incorporated.
- Pour the custard mixture over the partially baked crust. Carefully place it back into the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggles in the center.
- Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
- Serve at room temperature, but chilling in the fridge for an hour enhances flavors.
Notes
Monitor baking time closely to avoid overcooking, as this can result in a rubbery texture. Allow bars to cool completely before slicing for clean edges.
