Instructions
- Prepare the dough: Cream together the softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until combined.
- Incorporate dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Divide and color: Divide the dough into portions and knead in food coloring if desired.
- Roll it out: Roll one colored portion into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick. Repeat with the other colors and layer them on top of each other.
- Shape the roll: Roll the layered dough tightly into a cylinder.
- Chill the dough: Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour.
- Slice and bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the dough into 1/4-inch rounds and bake on a lined baking sheet for 10-12 minutes.
- Cool down: Let the cookies cool on a wire rack before serving.
