Ingredients
Scale
- 1 Baguette, sliced into ½-inch thick slices
- 2 Sweet onions (e.g., Vidalia or yellow)
- 8 oz. Mushrooms (e.g., cremini or shiitake), diced
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 2 tbsp Olive oil
- Fresh herbs (e.g., thyme, rosemary, or parsley)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Balsamic vinegar or honey (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the ingredients: Slice the baguette.
- Caramelize the onions: Melt butter with olive oil, add onions, and cook low and slow for 20-25 minutes until golden.
- Sauté the mushrooms: In another skillet, heat olive oil, add mushrooms, and sauté until tender (5-7 minutes).
- Combine the filling: Mix caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms in one skillet with fresh herbs and season to taste.
- Prepare the crostini: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and brush baguette slices with olive oil. Toast for 5-7 minutes until golden.
- Assemble the crostini: Top toasted bread with the onion and mushroom mixture.
- Finishing touches: Return to the oven for another 5 minutes to warm through.

Notes
Patience is key when caramelizing the onions to bring out their natural sugars. Avoid using pre-sliced mushrooms, and toast the bread for the best texture.
