Description

A delightful Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake infused with warm spices and topped with luscious caramel and apples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium Apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter (plus more for greasing the pan)
  • 1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 cup Milk (or buttermilk)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Prepare the caramel layer: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup of unsalted butter with 1 cup of brown sugar, stirring until smooth and bubbly. Pour this mixture into a greased 9-inch cake pan. Arrange sliced apples evenly over the caramel.
  2. Make the cake batter: In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup of softened butter with 1 cup of sugar until fluffy. Add two eggs one at a time, mixing well. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  4. Mix wet and dry: Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet, alternating with 1/2 cup of milk. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Assemble and bake: Carefully pour the batter over the apple-caramel layer and smooth with a spatula. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 45-50 minutes.
  6. Cool and flip: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges and carefully flip it onto a serving platter.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Slice into pieces and serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.

Notes

Serve warm for the best experience. Can be paired with ice cream or fresh fruit.
