Description
A delightful twist on traditional bobotie, these meatballs are infused with aromatic spices, sweet raisins, and served with a creamy custard topping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb (or turkey/chicken for leaner option)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup raisins or sultanas
- 2 tbsp curry powder
- 2 slices day-old white bread, soaked in milk
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, combine bread with milk, letting it sit until it absorbs the liquid.
- In a skillet, heat a touch of oil and sauté the chopped onion and garlic until they turn translucent.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, soaked bread, raisins, sautéed onions and garlic, spices, and chopped herbs. Knead gently until everything is mixed.
- Shape the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and place them on the baking tray.
- Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
- While they bake, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper for the custard topping.
- After the meatballs are cooked, pour the custard mixture over them in a baking dish and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 15 minutes.
- Let them cool slightly before serving warm over rice, garnished with fresh herbs.
Notes
For variations, consider using plant-based meat for a vegetarian option or adding coconut yogurt instead of eggs for a vegan alternative.
